Rostarr (Romon Kimin Yang) was born in South Korea and has lived in the United States since 1989. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1993. He has been a key figure in the city’s underground art scene and has exhibited throughout the US, Asia and Europe. In 2000, he was featured as one of I.D. magazine’s "I.D. 40 under 30". In 2004, Rostarr was an honoree at the annual AICP show at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) for his graphics in Nike Basketball Asia’s "Flow" campaign.
Rostarr relies on an intuitive, free-form process to create abstract geometric shapes from which elements of calligraphy and iconography emerge. His work incorporates elements of graphic art, design and physics. By using various materials and combining fluid hard lines and soft splatter, Rostarr is able to enhance the expressive capacity of surfaces. His work extends into the mediums of painting, digital media, sculpture, textile and public art projects with the 'Barnstormers' collective, a core member since 1999.
